Arnhem is a fairly large city (pop. 142,000) in the east of the Netherlands on the banks of the river Rhine. It is the capital of the province Gelderland, and forms the northern part of the Arnhem-Nijmegen metropolitan area (pop. 725,000)

  • By Train: Arnhem is on the main Inter City Express (ICE) line from Duisberg, Germany to Amsterdam. There are also many local trains to surrounding cities such as Utrecht, Zeist and Nijmegen. Regional trains are run under the authority of the Dutch Railways (Nederlandse Spoorwegen, NS)

Arnhem is one of the very few cities running trolleybuses for public transportation.

Go Dutch and hire a bike! Stationsplein (Stationsquare) next to the exit of the Station (Tel. +31(0)26 4421782). Rate per day EUR 5.20, per week (5 days or longer) EUR 21 Opening hours: Mon to Fri 5.15 - 1.15, Sat 6.15 - 1.00, Sun 7.00 - 1.00 At the bicycles hire shed a deposit of EUR 25 per bicycle is required. Payment by creditcard is acceptable. It is possible to take out a bicycle insurance. The premium amounts to 50c a day per bike. The deposit amount is doubled when a bicycle insurance is not taken out.

Shopping in the city centre of Arnhem. Arnhem has four major shopping streets, that are connected. They are the Roggestraat, Ketelstraat, Vijzelstraat, Rijnstraat. It's a pedestrian zone and has a length of appr. 1.5 km. On the left and right side of these Mainstreets there are several small streets with little shops and boutiques. Also in the southern part of the city there is a shopping mall, offering free parking, called "Kronenburg". It has a variety of shops, bars and snackshops.

Use the diversity of the international restaurants. In the Sonsbeekpark, there is a fantastic Chinese restaurant called "Sonsbeek paviljoen".

Italian Restaurant Zilli & Zilli. You can find it at the Jansplein in the heart of the city. It is a classical Italian Restaurant on the ground floor and an exclusive Italian Restaurant on the first floor. Look around in the city, as there are so many types of restaurants.

The local hostel is top notch. It's near the hospital on a main bus route from the train station.
