Niksic
From MyVacationsTo
In the west of Montenegro is the city of Niksic. Built in the 4th century, its original name was Onogost. Remains of this old city are today a cultural and historic monument.
In the vicinity of Niksic, from the direction of Podgorica, high in the cliffs, is the greatest spiritual centre of Montenegro, the Monastery of Ostrog. Founded in the12th century by Metropolitan Vasilijethat, who was later proclaimed Saint and miracle worker. Today his relics are here and Ostrog is the most visited Orthodox shrine in the Balkans.
Niksic is the second largest city in Montenegro. In Niksic proper there are a few interesting sites to see but most of the really interesting places are located on the way to or from the city such as the Ostrog Monastery.
In the city itself is the monumental Saborna Church, dedicated to Saint Vasilije and surrounded by a beautiful park. Niksic is flanked by three lakes: Krupac, Slano and Liverovici Lake. During the summer months these lakes are the main places for day trippers and holiday makers. Niksic is also well known for its production of the famous Niksicko beer.

The favorable geographical location made Niksic the crossroad of the naturally directed important roads built in the time of Romans, then through the Middle ages and later.
Niksic is the biggest industrial town and at the same time the second biggest center in the Republic. Its geographical location and the natural conditions placed the town on the crossroad which connects the mountainous, the middle and the coastal areas of the Republic, but links it as well with the neighboring countries and territories: Croatia, Bosna and Hercegovina, Albania, Serbia and Kosovo.
A good traffic connection of Niksic with other centers in Republic and Yugoslavia, and also with other countries, is one of the most important factors of development, and so the works on reconstruction and modernization of the roads are in progress.
The international road E-762, Salonika – Tirana – Podgorica – Niksic – Srbinje (Foca) – Sarajevo, is the most important traffic artery of the Niksic, connected with Podgorica as the capital of the Republic and with Bar, which is the main sea port. Apart from the republic, this road has an international importance because it links Niksic with Sarajevo and further, as a part of the system of the international net of E roads, with the middle and west Europe.
When the works on modernization and construction of the new sections of the road Risan – Niksic – Zabljak – Prijepolje are finished, this road will be the most important international and the shortest link between Serbia and the Montenegrin coast, as well as the connection between the international roads E65 and E760. By its construction there will not be such a risk, and the planned sinking of the highway through Platije, to travel to and from Serbia.
The highway Niksic – Trebinje – Dubrovnik is, also, a very important road through which the town is included in the international traffic system, which will, after the regulation of some formal problems, reestablish the tourist and economic importance and will enable the connection with Hercegovina, the area of Dubrovnik and Dalmacija.
The important roads are also Niksic – Cevo – Cetinje , Niksic – Vilusi – Bileca, Niksic – Krstac – Gacko, whose modernization is in progress.
The railroad Niksic – Podgorica, which is connected to the railroad Beograd - Bar, also contributes to the good traffic link of the town.
There is also a good communication with the airports Podgorica, Tivat and Cilipi, as well as with the port Bar, the tourist port Kotor and the merchandize port Zelenika.

In the broader surrounding there are numerous vacation areas.
- High above the Bjelopavlici plain, somewhere between Niksic and Danilovgrad right beside the high vertical cliff there is the monastery Ostrog [1].
- The water of the clear mountain streams concentrated in the north-west part of Niksic, is caught by a shapely arch, 3000m long, and in such a way is formed the biggest bathing place in the continental part of Montenegro. The clear water, the abundance of fish, a nicely arranged beach, the spacious field on the one side and the picturesque cliff on the other side, make the lake of Krupac an attractive and a suitable place for the organization of the sport and recreation complex.
- At the lake of Krupac, there is a motel ‘Plaza’, a beach and a promenade on the dam (quay Djordjija – Bata Gruicica) which are visited during every summer by several thousand people. Many sports on the water and many competitions, fishing, etc, are organized there. There are plans for the future to build the small beaches in the coves, the tracks around the lake, the golf courses, tennis courts, volleyball, basketball and soccer grounds.
- The whirlpool in Gornje Polje is the biggest karts opening in Europe, where in a definite time boils a spring, and when there are no rainfalls, an abyss appears.
- An important vacation area is the monastery Zupa. There is also a well preserved fortress Susjed in Zupa, known among the peoples of those areas as the Town of Jerina. In Staro selo there is a fortress in the form of a castle with the loopholes and openings for the cannons, which is among the most beautiful objects of its kind in Montenegro.
- The tourist and recreation complex, important for the winter tourism, is Vucje. There is a dormitory for mountaineers – a motel with 6 comfortable three – beds rooms, three large rooms with 55 beds, a restaurant and a café. There are 4 ski paths for athletes: a recreation path 1250m long, racing paths 2x400m and a pioneers’ path 700m long; there are also 3 ski-lifts with the capacities of 300 skiers per hour: ‘Poma’ – 1000m, ‘Pionir’ – 400m and ‘Ciciban’ – 100m.
- The reconstruction and the revitalization of Bedem [2] is in progress. Its complex – the old town occupies the area of 1,5 ha. In the first phase of reconstruction, the summer stage has been built with the capacity of 480 seats. The vaulted and the octagon tower have also been reconstructed and they will probably be used as wardrobes, nightclubs or galleries. The access stairways are also built as well as the access road and the parking lot. The reconstruction of Bedem will contribute to the better tourist offer of the town.
- The park complex Trebjesa is an important vacation area of Niksic. At the top of the hill Trebjesa, there is a motel, and there is a wonderful view from that place of the whole town of Niksic and its beauties. At the foothill of Trebjesa, there are the tennis courts and the sport center, which are important for the recreation. Its location is very good being in the center of the town.
- The forest complex Studenacke glave, which is protected by law, is also an important vacation area of the town. It is the green region occupying the area of 270 ha, whose special part is Balaca (the spring and the abyss).
