Stonehenge is a well-known Neolithic period stone monument located on the Salisbury Plain in Wiltshire, England. It is administered by English Heritage [1] and is on the UNESCO World Heritage List. Another more extensive stone circle is located at Avebury. Stonehenge is a popular tourist destination for visitors from all over the world.

There is some debate regarding the Stonehenge setting and The Stonehenge Project [2] is working to improve the environment and visitor experience at Stonehenge.

[edit] Get in

By Car: From London, take the M3/A303. From Salisbury take the A345. On both routes just follow the signage for Stonehenge. You can't miss it since it is visible from the A303.

By Train: Get a train to Salisbury, then take a bus from there. There is a direct connection from London Waterloo.

By Bus: From Salisbury, catch the 'Service 3' bus to Stonehenge (Wiltshire & Dorset bus company [3]).

[edit] See

While you can park in the car park, cross the road on foot, and look through the fence from the side of the road it is probably better to pay to get in.

An entry fee of £5.90 (May 2006) includes an audio guide and takes you through a tunnel under the road on to the site. There is no access to the stone circle itself - visitors are guided around the monument by roped pathways and on-site attendants. The audio guide is available in several languages and if you listened to all available material would take an estimated 30-60 minutes.

Some tour operators offer the possibility of going inside the circle so that you can actually touch it. This can only be done after the park is closed, and only on special dates. Check the dates with your tour operator. For the tours starting from London, the price starts from around £65 for adult, mostly incl. entry fee and pick-up service in your London hotel.

[edit] Do

  • Visit Stonehenge on the Summer Solstice (21 June) in order to see lots of neo-pagans and druids dressed in fantastic garb (English Heritage Summer Solstice 2006 information [4])

[edit] Eat

There is shop, cafe & toilet facilities available adjacent to the car park.
